Jack Fogel - Holocaust Summary

Jack Fogel
Jack Fogel’s testimony described about his experience with the Germans and the ghettos that he was stuck in.
In 1940, Fogel was picked up by a truck with about twenty other people and was transferred to different ghettos. While in the ghetto, the men were taught to be hard workers. Fogel worked in coalmines throughout his time in the camps.
One night some of the Jews tried to escape the camp, but were caught, so the Nazi rounded everyone up and shot ten people - including the escapees. They were told that the next time someone tried to escape twenty people would be killed.
Fogel and his companions that worked at the mines were rarely feed, which lead to many getting shot for going unconscious due to mal-nutrient. Due to the lack of food, Fogel almost died as well. However, Fogel was fortunate enough to have two other men standing by him when he fell. They carried him until he got some strength back to begin walking the rest of the way.
After 1944, Fogel stayed in a displaced person’s camp at age twenty because he had no family. He wanted to go to the United States, but wasn’t able to, so he started look for jobs to start making some money. He was able to get a job in Sydney, Australia in a clothing factory, which is where he meet is wife. Fogel was happy for the first time in years after what he had been through. While doing the interview he is now currently employed at a Jewish Holocaust museum. He wants to get across to people to tell them what really went on instead of the lies that are told. He wants to get across to students mainly to let them know that something like the Holocaust will never happen again. He wishes no pain upon anyone ever again like the pain he went through with his fellow mankind.

Gerda Weissmann Klein - Holocaust Summary

Gerda Weissmann Klein
Gerda Weissmann Klein was born on May 8, 1924.
When the war started, Gerda’s brother was forced into labor for the army. When they got word that Jew concentration camps were opening they moved to their basement to try and hide. In June of 1942, the family was found and split up. After being split up from her parents, Gerda was shipped to a slave labor factory that produced fabric for the German military.
She was able to make good friends through out her time of suffering as she was getting transported. When the girls made it to the factory they were supervised by a German woman, which was said to have been evil. However, Gerda was very grateful, because when she was sick, the German woman told her that it was life or death when the inspector came in that day. The woman tied Gerda’s boots and was able to continue her work when the inspectors came in.
When the train came to get the girls after being in the camp for three years, Gerda remembered a family committing suicide together and Gerda wanted to do that because she knew it was going to get bad. But, she promised her father that she’d never do such a thing. Her father grabbed her neck and made her promise that she would never do that because committing suicide was for cowards.
After getting off the train, the girls including Gerda were free to go in the freshly fallen snow. While they were wondering, so many girls were killed including her best friend. Walking around, a man was driving by and spotted Gerda. This was the very same man that ended up saving all the girls that had made it to the building. The man and Gerda ended up marring later. They were able to move to the United States, which is where they are currently live with their own family.
